So last night we went to see "Orphans" my friend Ayla's play over at Urban Stage on West 30th (between 7th & 8th). My god this play rocked. It centres around 3 people, "Treat" (played by my pal Andres), "Philip" (his younger slow of thinking brother) and "Harold" (a wise guy).
Basically it's about how Treat and Philip, two brothers who live by themselves in North Philadelphia, after the disappearance of their mother. Treat is a bad-tempered, petty thief who has been looking after his somewhat slow of thought younger brother since he was very small and will do ANYTHING to protect him which generally means keeping him indoors all the time by way of a "made-up" allergy reaction to the outside world.
Of course while Treat is out all day robbing wandering couples and businessmen, Philip is at home in the closet reading as much as he can get his hands on, which of course Treat hates as this is a threat to him, the thought of Philip gaining his own identity and independence.
One night Treat meets Harold, an older businessman with an expensive suit and a wobbly stance. Harold likes Treat and refers to him as the Dead End Kid. Anyway Harold comes home with Treat and evenutally due to alcohol, passes out. Treat takes advantage of this, ties him and decides to keep him for ransom after finding a briefcase full of stocks and bonds.
Ok I don't want to say anymore, or it will be spoiled, but basically it's the relationship and personalities of three very different men and how they're coping with the outside (well not for Philip) world. It's absolutely brilliant and my friend Andres is so powerful in this play that I hardly recognised him as the cool, handsome pool player that I know.
The way in Treats mood swings is wild. One minute cheerful and ironic, the next scary and menacing. Gabriel(Philip)Fazio's performance is astonishing, the way he moves and sits with the stance of a child in a man's body. The way he jumps if Treat even flinchs and how his body movements changed when in Harolds company was just brilliant. Of course I was expecting to see greatness with David (Harold) Gideon's performance, being an ex-student of Lee Strasberg and then the school's Director, but I had no idea how simple he made acting look. Just the way he attempted time after time (if not for interruptions from Treat) to put his glasses on to read the Chicago Tribune was amazing. Yeah I know a bit bizarre but honestly the man was inspiring.
Yes I spent the first half of the show sat back in my seat, giggling at the funny parts and wincing every time Treat got angry. But by the second half I was sat forward, elbows on knees completely mesmerised and wishing to god I knew who's red shoe that was.
Please support this show, go see it, call 212 613 5826, It's closing night is February 2nd so move it, pick up that phone and book. By the way last night the show was packed, completely sold out. In fact some people had to sit in the aisle but for god's sake don't tell the fire department that.
Wow it really is beautiful out, not that Morpheus would know, he's been in bed all day playing on his computer and now I can hear him snoring...lazy bugger. At least I went out to get bagels and loo roll. So I'm glad to say that we've just booked our ski trip to Vermont...very excited, getting the train from Grand Central at like 7:15am, arrive about midday. We booked Business Class which is lovely, we've done it before, nice and quiet and no smelly bastards to contend with.
Also there's a courtesy pick-up from Rutland to take us back to the Killington Grand Hotel...fantastic, love it. Absolutely can't wait to use my little blades, dead excited. There's also a massage service so I'm going to book myself one every day while I'm there...believe me there is NOTHING better than a massage after a hard day on the slopes.
Right I'm going to go and jump on Morpheus....Jackass style.
The weather today in New York is absolutely incredible, like a beautiful Spring day and it's STILL JANUARY...cool!!
